Meet the Persian

Is your feline friend a Persian? These cute, fluffy kitties are one of the most popular breeds in the world, and with good reason. They’re extremely sweet and lovable pets! A vet discusses the Persian below.

Temperament

Persians are usually quite relaxed. They are also very loving, and really enjoy snuggling. In one study of kitty ‘purrsonalities,’ the Persian scored higher than non-pedigreed cats in several categories, including vocalization, cleanliness, and how affectionate they are. That said, they can be picky about whose laps they grace. Fluffy may bond closely with you, but just ignore everyone else.

Grooming

One of the Persians’ most distinct features is their pretty fur. These furballs are very pretty and fluffy. Your feline buddy will need some help with her beauty routine. We recommend brushing your feline friend daily, or at least every other day. Your feline friend will also need the occasional bath. If you adopt a Persian kitten, it’s best to get little Fluffy used to being bathed while she’s young. You’ll thank yourself later.

History

The Persian is actually one of the oldest known breeds of cats. Fluffy has been depicted in hieroglyphics dated as far back as 1684 BC. As one may suspect, these kitties likely originated in Persia, in the area now known as Iran. An Italian traveler named Pietro Della Valle brought them to Europe in the 1500’s. We suspect it didn’t take long for them to wrap the Italians around their cute little paws.

Coloring

These cute kitties are typically quite fluffy. They can sport a variety of pretty colors and patterns. Some of these include solid, silver and gold, shaded, smoke, tabby, particolor, bicolor, and Himalayan. We think they’re all adorable.

Chatter

Persians can be chatty, but they aren’t particularly loud. Their voices are usually quite cute and charismatic, and perhaps a bit squeaky. Fluffy also tends to talk back when spoken to.

Activity

Persians are playful, but calm down quite a bit once past kittenhood. Fluffy really does best as a pampered indoor ‘princess’ pet. We don’t recommend letting her go outdoors.

Health Issues

Many Persians are quite flat-faced. Breeders deliberately seek out that squished-face look. This may be cute, but unfortunately it leaves Fluffy vulnerable to some serious health issues, including shortness of breath, tearing, and eye problems. Ask your vet for care tips.
